starting major song writing project, I really need advice .... heeeelllppp?

im away to start a new project, only finnish read the Divine Comedy and im planning on writing a song based on Dante's Inferno or to put it more correctly im about to Dante's hell trying to convert a song first and foremost it is a pretty decent idea or just pretentious twaddle? How do I do second, I had planned originally written in a verse of each circle of hell, with every verse is narrated by one of the dammed in that circle, however im toying with the idea of narrating Virgil whole song standpoint, thirdly, how should I do I stick true to the masterpiece of Dante or should I give a modern twist on it, finally, err rock, folk, prog, gothic or any other genre of music?
